Sheldon Lavin: Sustainability and Expansion

Sheldon Lavin is the CEO of OSI Group and has been with the company since 1975. Previously, Lavin worked as an investment manager and bank executive. One client he had, Otto & Sons, thought so highly of the work that he did with their finances that they asked him to become part-owner. Although he declined, he stayed on as a consultant and in 1975, Otto & Sons become OSI Group, with Sheldon Lavin finally becoming a partner.

McDonalds is one of OSI’s most important customers and a few years after Lavin made partner, McDonalds insisted that Lavin committed to the OSI Group and he was soon made chairman and CEO.

In the 2000s, when the final partner at OSI retired, Sheldon Lavin was given complete voting control over OSI and all their decisions. He admitted that he would have went back to investment banking if he didn’t believe that OSI could become “something big.”

Sheldon Lavin ensures that OSI continues its research on sustainability and environmental impacts by giving R&D the funding that they need. Keeping track of their supply chain and guaranteeing that best practices are used in each step keeps OSI at the forefront of sustainability improvements.

With many of their suppliers and food processing operations around the globe, Sheldon Lavin appointed Nicole Johnson-Hoffman to be chief sustainability officer in 2017. This role consists of a global oversight and management of sustainability practices to make certain that OSI is doing everything it can to remain at the leading edge of sustainability.

Not only has Lavin been an integral part in OSI’s sustainability practices, but he has also had a major role in their global expansion. In The late 1980s to 1990s, they expanded into Brazil, Poland, Mexico, Austria, Hungary, and the Pacific Rim. They also have many other agreements with China, the Philippines, Japan, India, and Australia. OSI Group opened a beef facility in Japan in 2010 and a poultry facility in China in 2013, among many other expansions.

With OSI becoming “something big,” they have the opportunity to influence how the world obtains and processes their food.

OSI Group – Over 100 Years of Growth

Over 100 years ago, a German immigrant named Otto Kolschowsky came to Chicago and started a small butcher shop in the Oak Park section of South Chicago. By the end of World War I Mr. Kolschowsky moved into the wholesale side of the meat and butcher business and they renamed the business Otto & Sons in 1928.

As the suburban sprawl began in post World War II America, Ray Kroc opened the first McDonald’s restaurant in 1955 in Des Plains, IL. Otto Kolschowsky’s sons Arthur and Harry entered into an agreement with Ray Kroc to be the the first supplier of fresh meat for McDonalds. Although Otto & Sons still supplied the local community with meat, supplying meat for McDonalds became their primary business responsibility.

In 1975 Otto & Sons became OSI Group. Sheldon Lavin was asked to be a partner in the company in 1975. As McDonalds expanded, so did OSI Group. More and more facilities opened in the 1970’s and 1980’s in the US and abroad. OSI Group started branching out from only supplying McDonalds and became a global brand all over the world.

In the early 1980’s OSI Group extended extensively into the international market through joint ventures and acquisitions. As OSI grew in Europe and Asia, the US expansion was well underway. In the 1980’s and 1990’s the company concentrated on the production of hot dogs, bacon and sausage. The early 2000’s saw OSI Group seriously expand into the poultry business. The most aggressive purchase was Amick Farms, headquartered in Batesburg-Leesville SC. OSI Food Solutions UK awarded 2016 Globe of Honour by the British Safety Council.

Today, OSI is located in the Chicago suburb of Aurora, 30 miles from Otto Kolschowsky’s original butcher shop. OSI Group’s corporate culture leaves the management of each regional and international plant to operate as regional culture dictates.

From butcher shop to International Conglomerate, Otto Kolschowsky would be proud.

OSI Food Solutions Wins Prestigeous Globe of Honour Award

In an age where people are constantly looking for ways to cut corners, it is so refreshing to find a company that refuses to take short cuts, but rather goes the extra mile to ensure their customers only get the very best services and products. Honoring companies such as this is one of the reasons why the Globe of Honour Award was created by the British Safety Council. This award is given each year to companies which show exemplary management of environmental risks.

For the year 2016, this prestigious honour was given to OSI Food Solutions UK. The area of environmental risks is often a hot spot of short cut and policy by passing. However, this is one area in which strict adherence to safety codes are so important to the safety of a company’s employees as well as to the safety of the communities in which that company operates.

Those being honored each year are given their award at a special luncheon held at Drapers’ Hall London.

In 2016, eighteen organizations were honored with this award. Earning this award is no easy task. Each company must earn the five stars during a British Safety Council’s environmental audit. This test is conducted for an entire year, from August of one year to the July of the next year. In addition to this the company must undergo exam from a panel of experts to examine if their environmental management is consistent
throughout the entire company.

The award was presented to OSI Food Solutions by Mike Robinson. Robinson is the Chief Executive of the British Safety Counsel. The award was accepted by Kelly Grimwood. Grimwood is the Environmental Manager Europe for OSI Food Solutions. In accepted in the award Grimwood said, “Leadership is a key factor in achieving excellence.” She went on to say that she hoped OSI Food Solutions would inspire other companies to reevaluate  environmental policies and to recommit themselves to compliance with British environmental safety standards.

Not only is this important for OSI Foods UK, but it also sends a strong message to
other companies, that environmental integrity is important. This is the way to distinguish yourself from other companies.

OSI Food Solutions has been conducting business in Scunthorpe since 1989. They are responsible for producing beef and pork products. These products are used in the UK restraint industry. This is not the first time the company has been awarded the Globe of Honour. In 2013 as well as 2015 the company was recognized for this award.
